Yarn Shop Visit: Wollhaus

Hi friends!

How was your weekend?!  Lots was happening around parts — preliminary cleaning, sorting, and packing (how is it possible that we’re leaving here next Saturday?!) and, most importantly, a lot of knitting, nay, finishing (!!! yes I finished not one, not two, but THREE knits, woo hoo!) happened. As I type, my Vatsland Jumper by Ella Gordon has just about finished drying — I can’t wait to tell you all about it. But while I wait for those last gorgeous fibers to dry, I figured it was high time to tell you about the shop from which the Shelter it’s knit with came. Nestled in a little plaza in Pasadena, Wollhaus is a charming shop that carries some really lovely yarn lines — including the full range of Brooklyn Tweed yarns.  I love finding a reason to stop by — Ulli and the rest of the staff are always happy to chat, to ooh and ahh over what you’re working on (even if the yarn came from somewhere else) and there’s always some scrummy yarn to squeeze!

Wollhaus is nearby to both home and work, so I’ve spent a fair amount of time there during my time in LA.  So of course, when my sister visited, in addition to exploring The Altered Stitch with her, I had to take her by Wollhaus.  (I also really wanted to get her to Gather DTLA, but we just ran out of time).  I managed to snap pictures on that visit, but never got around to sharing them here!

 

When you walk into the spacious shop, you’re greeted by shelf upon shelf filled with some really gorgeous yarns.  As I mentioned, the shop carries the full range of Brooklyn Tweed (Shelter, Loft, Arbor, and the new laceweight, Vale)

As well as tons of other gorgeous yarns, including a healthy selection of Madeline Tosh sock:

The bulk of the yarn is on the bottom floor, and steps lead up to a mezzanine floor, where, especially on a Tuesday or Thursday, when the shop stays open until 8 pm, you’ll find a happy group of knitters nattering away.

Because the second floor is just a mezzanine, it means most of the shop has nice high ceilings, giving everything a very airy feel. And it creates space for some very fun decorations:

The shop is also filled with lovely samples (in fact, just after my sister’s visit, there was a Brooklyn Tweed trunk show … I hopped along and tried on some different pieces, which was lots of fun, but I didn’t think to take pictures that day)

My sis fell in love with a Pebble Beach sample knit up in Vale (pictured above left) and got herself the yarn for it … I can’t wait to see hers knit up!

Such a special shop … I’m trying to come up with a reason to stop by one more time before we hit the road.  I’ve been so spoiled for choice with yarn shops here in LA, something I never thought would be the case when Mr. N got his one-year position out here.  From what I’ve seen, Los Angeles has such a warm, friendly knitting community … I’m sad I didn’t get to spend just a bit more time in it!
